WHAT IS EPILEPSY ?

According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, epilepsy is a physical condition that occurs when there is a sudden, brief change in how the brain works. When brain cells are not working properly, a persons consciousness, movement, or actions may be altered for a short time. These physical changes are called seizures. Research shows that there are about 20 different types of seizures. A person that has recurring seizures is often diagnosed with epilepsy.

Epilepsy commonly starts in childhood. However, it can strike at any age. Epilepsy affects more people than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and tuberculosis combined.

2.5 million Americans are presently living with epilepsy and 180,000 people will be newly diagnosed each year. Currently, over 300,000 children in the United States under the age of 14 have epilepsy.

We need to aggressively address this neurological disorder that can have a significant effect on the quality of one's life.
